Guest User

When the clocks go back at the end of October it can be easy to forget that suddenly we are left with one less hour of daylight in the evening. Therefore it’s important at this time of year to think ahead and make sure you're prepared for cycling in the dark.

Sustrans, the charity that makes it easier for people to walk and cycle, has provided a useful guide that can be accessed by clicking here.

Tis the season to plan your travel

Guest User

As Greater Manchester heads towards the end of another year, commuters, tourists and visitors are being advised to plan well ahead to ensure a festive season filled with Christmas cheer.

To ensure a stress-free run into Christmas, planners at Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) have been working hard to make travellers’ journeys across the region as easy as possible.

But before the decorations go up and the carols are sung there are fireworks to look forward too – with a number of Bonfire Night displays taking place over this coming weekend– with the largest events happening on Sunday 5 November at Heaton Park, Wythenshawe Park and Platt Field’s Park.

Additionally, Manchester City host Arsenal at The Etihad on the same day, with the game kicking off at 2.15pm. That means fans will be leaving at the same time as people are heading out to the displays.

Thousands of spectators are expected to attend these events, meaning the region’s roads are likely to be busier than normal. To ensure people have a choice of how they want to get around, TfGM is providing as much additional public transport as possible, meaning this will be the best option to get to the numerous great events and displays.

A handy travel advice page is available to help guide customers get around on Bonfire Night. TfGM has also put together a Christmas across the region travel advice page to help you to keep you moving on your Christmas travel and shopping trips.

Greater Manchester’s ten boroughs will also be hosting various star-studded light switch-ons and other festive events over the coming weeks. The website details what’s going on where and when and provides advice on how best to complete your journey.

Trams, trains and buses are all likely to start getting busier than normal and operators are looking to provide as much additional capacity as possible. Customers are advised to plan ahead and allow additional time.

Transport operators will also be providing additional staff throughout the festive period and many of the region’s events will have enhanced security measures in place.

TfGM’s Events and Operational Coordination Manager, Ryan Carter, said: “The festive season is always a busy time of the year for Greater Manchester, and this year is no different.

“We want everyone travelling to these events, both for Bonfire Night and over the Christmas period, to have a fantastic time.

“To ensure transport is stress free and easy we have been working hard to develop detailed travel plans help keep our customers moving.”

Councillor Andrew Fender, Chair of the Transport for Greater Manchester Committee, said: “Year on year Christmas in Greater Manchester continues to grow and attract more and more visitors to the region.

“It’s vitally important our transport links are able to cope with this extra demand and provide our customers with viable options when travelling across the city.

“Having these plans in place allows visitors to have a drink and enjoy themselves, but also get to and from their destination safely.”

Metrolink TPL Work Update - Mosley Rd/Parkway

Guest User

Dear Recipient,

I would like to provide you with an update on Metrolink work in Trafford Park. Works planned are as follows:

·         Mosley Road: The current temporary one way working on Mosley Road north of Village Way will be reversed. This will prevent vehicles from entering Mosley Road from Village Way but it will enable them to exit Mosley Road onto Village Way to travel eastbound. This switchover is required to enable the statutory utility diversion works across the mouth of Mosley Road to be completed and will take place on Monday 6th November 2017. It will remain in force for approx. 6 weeks. The alternative route for northbound traffic requiring access to Mosley Road (north of Village Way) will be via Village Way (eastbound), Village Circle, Trafford Park Road and Mosley Road.

·         Parkway: the southbound off-slip to Barton Dock from the southbound carriageway of Parkway will be closed on the 10th, 11th and 12th November between 8pm and 6am. This is to facilitate statutory undertaker diversion works in connection with the Metrolink extension works. The alternative route for traffic will be via Parkway southbound carriageway, Lostock Circle, Parkway northbound carriageway, Parkway northbound carriageway off-slip and Barton Dock Road.

Please note that there will be signposted diversion routes in place for each of the above works and access to businesses will be maintained.

Get ready for winter

Guest User

People in Greater Manchester are being urged to ‘get ready for winter’ by planning ahead and being prepared before they travel.

Wintry weather can make travelling difficult and disrupt journeys, but taking action now and being prepared can help keep you moving.

A special winter weather webpage has been set up including tips, expertise and useful links to keep everyone moving during the winter months.

Whether you travel by car, bike, bus, train, tram, or on foot, Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) encourages you to do the following:

  • Visit TfGM.com for real time departure information for the region’s bus, train and tram services. The site also has an alert system to flag up delays affecting public transport.
  • Sign up to receive the Met Office’s weather alerts and get advance warning when bad weather is forecast.
  • Have the contact details for your transport operator to hand, and follow them on Twitter, so you know who to check with if there are problems.
  • Allow extra time for journeys, as wintry weather can affect road and rail conditions, which can make travel slower.
  • Use the TfGM Journey Planner to research in advance what alternative services or routes are available if travel plans are affected.
  • Take extra care when boarding and leaving buses, trains and trams; use the handles on the vehicle for support.

If you travel on two wheels, check the #WinterCyclingGM page for some top tips on preparing your bike.  It also includes details of free cycle training and maintenance courses over the winter.

When travelling by car, check your oil levels, tyre pressures, windscreen washers, antifreeze, and your petrol gauge before you set off on a journey – it might make all the difference later.

Lucy Kennon, who leads TfGM’s preparations for wintry weather, said: “If severe weather strikes, take extra care when you're out and about, no matter what form of transport you use.

“We will do all we can to keep people moving this winter, but it’s worth remembering that a bit of preparation now can save a lot of time and frustration later on.

“By visiting our webpage, you can find useful information such as travel tips, alternative travel options, website links and contact details, all at the push of a button or tap of a screen.”

Travellers can also sign up to receive the weekly Travel Update email subscription service covering major events and planned changes affecting roads, buses, trains and trams.

Women on Wheels campaign - Information and Social Evening

Guest User

Dear All

For this year’s Women on Wheels campaign, we are offering grants for activities relating to Women’s Cycling, to encourage, inspire and enable more women to get on their bikes in 2018.

For those of you that may be interested, we are offering grants of up to £2500 for Greater Manchester non-profit organisations to run a series of events to help women start, return to or progress their cycling.

The aim of any events funded should ultimately be to encourage and enable more women to make journeys by bike, and we are looking for organisations, clubs and charities to run a whole programme or series of women’s cycling events rather than one off-single day events, (although these of course would still be considered).

The information and social evening is an informal event to find out what we did last year, what’s changed for this year, an opportunity to exchange ideas and find out what you need to do next if you would like to apply for a grant.

Rapha CC Manchester are kindly hosting the evening in their lovely clubhouse café and will be providing coffee and cake!

Come along and have a chat with us about what the grants are about and how you can apply.

For those of you who can’t make the event, drop us an email at cycling@TfGM.com to get an application form.

Time: 6:00 – 7:30pm

Date: 9th November

Venue: Rapha Clubhouse, 5 St Ann’s Passage, Manchester, M2 6AD

Plan ahead to avoid any unexpected travel spooks this weekend

Guest User

Commuters are being advised to plan their journeys to avoid any scares ahead of a busy weekend of sporting and spooky events taking place as Greater Manchester celebrates Halloween.

Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) has been working hard to help those travelling into the city centre and areas of Trafford to make their journeys as easy and as stress free as possible.

A travel advice page is available to help commuters with their travel plans.

As well as Manchester United hosting Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford, large crowds are expected for Halloweekend, taking place across the city. A Men’s Health Survival of the Fittest event takes place at the Etihad on Saturday and heavy metal legends Metallica play the Manchester Arena on Saturday evening.

The size and locations of the events mean that public transport and the road network in the region will be busier than normal.

There are also some changes to Metrolink services on both days, affecting the Bury, Rochdale and Manchester Airport lines.

There will also be no direct trains running from Manchester Piccadilly to Leeds over the course of the weekend due to Network Rail improvement works.

TfGM’s Transport and Event Planning Lead, John Fryer, said: “We want everyone coming in to the region for these events to have a fantastic time. We have the skills, expertise and experience to manage these large scale events and have a thorough and detailed plan.

“However, we are expecting large numbers of customers to travel and our advice is to plan ahead, think about your travel options and allow extra time for journeys.

“Whether you’re flying in on the Witch Way or travelling in the midnight hour, there’s nothing scary about travelling this weekend and our plans mean there’ll be no gremlins across the network.”
